Wyzecam 2 Offline?

My main wyzecam 2 which is in another location is offline when I check my iphone. I’m not sure why. I know that it would occasionally happen if there is a power outage and then the power is out. However, I’m not sure if the power is out there or not.

If it still shows offline after a day or two and I know it isn’t a power outage, is there a way to get the camera to turn back on? I have cam lite plus as I signed up for it years ago. I do have a 32gb storage card in it. I can’t view footage of it if I’m not there physically? Only if it’s online, then I can view old footage?

Another wyzecam I have I’m the owner of it and I can turn that one on and off. There is another wyzecam that I’m not the owner of but the owner shares the wyzecam with me so I can look at the footage. The thing is I clicked on something and no events show. How do I get those events back showing for that camera that I’m not the owner of?

The on/off in the app is more of an enable/disable, it has to be physically powered on and have internet connectivity in order to work.

There isn’t really any way to know what is going on if there is nobody there that can confirm power and internet and physically look at the camera. A lot of people that run stuff like this at a remote location where nobody is around will connect them to a smart plug so they can remotely power cycle them if needed. Of course that’s also handy because if your smart plug is off line (I would use a separate brand other than wyze just for “diversity”) you know your internet or power is probably having a problem. Sometimes a quick power blip will leave something in a frozen state and power cycling it will fix it.

If you have cam plus lite you should be able to still access the clips from prior to the issue regardless of whether the cam is online or not - that would be on the “events” tab. Though I don’t have that subscription so I can’t say 100% for sure, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work if the cam is offline.

For your other issue with the shared cam, would need more info, what type of cam, which screen in the app are you looking for the events on, did you enable a filter or change the date, etc?

I have the wyzecam 2 connected to a wall outlet. So if power comes back, then the wyzecam2 should power back on. I’m not there now so I’m not sure if it’s a power outage. If it is, it wouldn’t be that long. It’s possible my internet might be offline as well if it isn’t a power outage.

I have cam lite plus, the free one that I signed up for a while back. I don’t get much event notifications from it on that camera because no one is there. So I occasionally get events that show up that are sound.

The thing is one camera that I’m not the owner of is shared with me. That person is the owner. There would be a lot of events showing from that camera since it records lot of motion. It doesn’t appear on my events anymore because I clicked on something. How do I have that camera events show up?

I’m in the Favorites Tab. Shows Device Offline for that wyzecam 2. If might be power outage or internet is down but I don’t know.

When I click on events, it shows recent events and doesn’t show any events from that other camera that someone is sharing with me. Normally there are tons of events showing there.

For your cam, if the power comes back on or your internet comes back online, it should hopefully come back automatically (unless damaged by a power surge etc). Just have to wait and see. It is possible the cam (and/or base station if it is the outdoor model) has died, it is fairly old.

For the other person’s cam, on the events tab there is a button that looks like a funnel at the top right (filter). Go in there and make sure their cam is checked off.

The wyzecam 2 is plugged into an outlet inside the apartment. Usually when the camera is on and I’m there… by there mean I’m in the apartment or am close to the apartment to check, it’s either a power outage or internet was out. Whenever power comes back or internet comes back, I don’t need to do anything and the camera just comes back on like normal. I’m assuming it;s the same issue now as I’m not there at the moment. But if it last for a day or longer, then it is either the internet or the wyzecam itself.

The thing is when I click sd card to check it, I can’t right because it’s offline and I’m not there to check?

Okay checking the funnel does work. So I had turned that off. I just checked it so now lot of events from that camera show up.

Yes assuming it is just a power or internet issue, when it comes back on you should get access to the cam again. The reason I mention the smart plug (that you can power on and off from your phone remotely) is in case the cam freezes, which any electronic device can do from time to time, especially during a brief power blip. But like I said, at this point you’ll just have to wait and see if it comes back or not. Could even be something like your internet router has frozen up too (in which case a smart plug wouldn’t help, other than to tell you that it isn’t just your cam having issues).

Correct, the SD card is in the camera, you can’t view the videos on it unless the camera is online. However I believe you should be able to see cam plus (cloud) recordings as those are stored on Wyze servers, but if the cam is offline, obviously they’ll only be from before it went offline.

Glad the filter fixed the other issue.

@paulyronnie You may want to consider purchasing a WYZE plug? Plug that into your wall outlet, then plug your camera into the plug. This way if both the plug and the camera are offline you know the issue is either power or ISP related. If the plug is online and the camera is offline, then typically turning the plug off and on is enough to bring the camera back online.

Just a thought, but not a requirement.
Have a great day ahead!

I never heard of this smart plug. Is it new? Is this mainly for wyzecam or it’s in general? I only connect the wyzecam 2 to a wall outlet.

At the moment, still shows wyzecam 2 offline. So most likely it’s the internet then right? I don’t think it’s a power outage anymore.

Okay I can’t view the sd card unless camera is online. However, wasn’t it mentioned a while back if your camera is off due to power outage or whatever reason, when the camera turns on again… it would have footage the entire time the camera was offline or is that not true? I thought you can’t do that though but you can or can’t? Something like even if your camera is off due to power outage or something like that… your camera still is recording? That you can view it later or the footage or not?

I only have cam plus free version that I signed up for and have the 32gb card in the wyzecam 2.

When did this wyzecam plug came out? I never heard of it.

So most likely it’s an internet issue with my router then right? My wyzecam is still offline and I don’t think it’s a power outage because usually it’s not that long.

So with the wyze plug, I will know exactly what is the reason for why my wyzecam 2 is offline then? So if the plug and wyzecam 2 is off, it’s a power outage or my router. But if plug is on and not wyzecam, then what is the reason? The thing is what situations would be where the plug is on but the wyzecam is off then?

If I’m not there, I can still turn on the plug with my iphone from another location?

I think the first WYZ plugs were offered in 2020 or 2021? I don’t recall exactly. The first version of the plugs had major issues for at least a year. Be glad you didn’t hear of them back then.

In my experience, a WYZE cam is more likely to flake out than a modern WYZE plug running current firmware. My thought is if they are both offline, then it will be power or internet related. If just the cam is offline, it flaked out. Typically when a WYZE cam flakes out, a simple power cycle of the camera resolves the issue.

If you have a WYZE plug, it will be very easy to power cycle the camera to bring it back online. Without a WYZE plug, someone has to physically unplug the camera and plug it back into the wall outlet.

I am sure you could figure out if it’s an internet outage by calling your ISP. You would just need to have your account number when you call them. They should be able to determine if there is a service interruption in your area and if your “modem” is online.

I am also sure you could figure out if it’s a power issue. Contact your power company with your account number and they should be able to tell you if there is an outage. You could also contact one of your neighbors and see if their power is on.

Best regards,

Smart plugs have been around for a long time. There are several brands. I’d actually use a non-wyze one that way if there is an issue with the app or wyze servers, it won’t impact both things. TP Link is a common brand and they have cheap plugs, but there are several major brands out there.

As long as the camera has power and is working, it will record to the SD card. I don’t believe the v2 is one of the ones that will reboot every 30 minutes when it loses internet. The ones that do, they still record to the card, but the date/time ends up being wrong and it is a bit more difficult to find the footage. But like I said I don’t think yours is one that does that.

Power and internet are only two possible reasons it is offline. The cam itself could be frozen, or it could even have died (the power adapter or the cam itself). No way to know at this point.

Here i a good article on Smart Plugs.

Okay is the wyze plug came out a while back. So the reason for this wyze plug is for this reason?

I am pretty certain it isn’t the power because the wyzecam 2 is still offline now. So it has to be my wifi internet or the wyzecam 2 itself right? Which one is more likely?

The thing is when I have access to the wyzecam 2 and then unplug it and plug it back in and then it works, would I have footage of the entire recording from when the wyzecam 2 stopped working till when I have access to the wyzecam 2?

I do have recording on continuous so it overrides older footage. My SD card is 32gb so it overrides footage every week or so? But when I get access to the wyzecam 2, would I be able to view the last week of footage?

I heard a while back that if you have a power outage or internet goes out and so does your wyzecam, when your power or internet comes back on, you can view your wyzecam footage of the entire time you wyzecam is out as it’s recording offline? Or is that not true? It didn’t make sense how it could record it like that?

Why not call your ISP and find out? My one and only v2 NEVER goes offline. So I would guess it’s your internet service.

Who is your ISP?

Usually ISPs have Apps that allow you to check status of your Internet Modem/Router as well as functions to manage the Wi-Fi like changing the SSID and Password, pausing Wi-Fi access for certain devices, …

If no power then camera cannot do anything and cannot record to SD Card.

Just ran a test on my OG.

  • Set SD Card Recording to Continuous.
  • Used my ISP App to Pause Internet to OG.
  • A few seconds later OG shows as Offline.
  • Waited 5 min and used ISP App to resume Internet to OG.
  • OG shows as online.
  • Checked SD Card Timeline and no breaks in continuous recording.

So I guess as long as camera has power Continuous SD Recording will record with or without Internet access … learn something new every day :slightly_smiling_face:

I’d be interested in seeing what happens if you waited >30 minutes because of this:

I believe @grapefruityoda has done extensive testing and documentation of this behavior with Cam v3 through different firmware iterations. I haven’t seen any recent tests involving Cam OG or other models.

Can’t contact the ISP and can’t be in that location for a bit. I do know there is no way it’s a power outage because the camera is still offline now.

So it has to be the internet going down or something with the wyzecam where I have to unplug it and plug it back in. I can’t do that for a while though until I’m there.

What I want to know is when I do have access to the wyzecam, would it show record of the last week or so since it’s recording continuously but it’s not on? Example I go there a week later. When I unplug and plug the wyzecam back on and it now powers on… when I check old footage, will it show the last week? Or it will only show footage from the last time the wyzecam was powered on and before?

I heard people say if you have a power outage or internet outage for a few hours… say your wyzecam is off. But once power or internet is back on and your wyzecam is back online, you could actually view the footage for the last few hours? Or you can’t?

Wired cameras will not work during a power outage. When you access the camera after the power comes back on, there will be no recordings for the power outage period.

If the power is ON but there is an internet outage AND Continuous SD Recording is ON the camera may record.

  • From other posts in the forum, depending on camera model and firmware version:
    • The full recording is available through the WYZE App,
    • Only the first 30 min of recording is available through the WYZE App.
Recordings beyond 30 min may be in a separate folder on the SD Card
and can be viewed on a PC.
  • In your case your camera has been Offline for days and I don’t know if anyone can say for sure if Offline Continuous SD Recording works over several days.

I don’t understand this comment.
Your ISP is AT&T, Xfinity, Spectrum, Starlink, … and you should be able to contact them.

You should also be able to download their App that allows you to check the status of your Internet Modem/Router.
