Wyze outdoor base network saturation

I have a client that has a poor rural internet connection.

14 down / 3 up

When we plug the Wyze base into the router the rest of his internet connected devices are intermittent at best.

Unplug the base. Internet is fine.

So I ran a traffic monitor and can see that the Wyze base when plugged in spikes in usage to 14 MBps every second or so.

This happens regardless of any of the cameras are recording.

I’m guessing there isn’t much I can do other than get a router capable of rate limiting that Wyze base.

I just thought I’d ask in the event anyone has come up against this problem.

D

Hmm, how many cams do you have on that base? We have 3, and a internet speed of 5 down 3 up, and it doesnt seem to cause any issues. There is certainy a spike in traffic during live view or when an event is being recorded, but never anything huge. Is it just 14 spikes, or constantly?

Sorry, it spikes every couple of minutes.

Hmm, are you sure its not uploading an event when it spikes? Check your events page and see if it lines up with the spikes your seeing.

When I did the test here all 3 of my cameras were in a closet.
And no events recorded.

Me too!

Yes, I have the same problem but my internet is 250 down and 10 up but when the base station is plugged in I get constant spikes where my speeds drop very low. So far my only solution has been unplug the basestation. I tried to put it on my second router that is setup as an access point which I use for my smarthome devices but even there its bogging down my system. Wyze really needs to fix this and if it happens to some but not others I would say it has to be wyze has faulty hardware.

Not that we should have to but have you tried a different base station?

I have 2 spares now because it was not much more to buy the camera/base combo than just buying the add on camera.

I just haven’t had time to try one of the new base stations at the clients place where I was having the issue.

If I get around to it I will update this thread with the results.

I’ve been using the same base station since October 2020. Basic Motorola cable modem/AC1900 router combo. My House is only 2000 square feet, one story wood frame. Cams are 45 feet, 40 feet, 35 feet and 30 feet from the base. Internet is 100 down 6 up.

I haven’t tried a different base station mainly because you are correct we shouldn’t have to do that, but I’d be curious if that does fix the problem. I don’t really want to put anymore money into wyze at this point. Have you had any success with their support? I haven’t heard anything back anytime I submit something to them.

@dan_seeall

I think that I might be having similar issues. My post was about the frequency that this system runs on, initially thinking that the frequency of the camera’s were conflicting with other devices on my network, but now I’m starting to think that it is the base station that is the issue.

What did you use to monitor the traffic of the base station?
