I have a Wyze Duo Cam Doorbell installed at 3 properties. On my house, the approach to the front door is fairly direct/straight on from about 5’ in front of the cam (sidewalk is off to the side). So I’ve seen no recording issues.
At the second location, the cam is facing the front porch steps (which go about ~5’ out) and then the sidewalk beyond it that goes straight to the street about 25’ away. Over the past few months, the camera has simply stopped recording people walking up the sidewalk to the front of the steps (again ~5’ out) OR walking past the cam (from the right to left or vice versa) about 6’ away.
At the third location, I’ve seen similar inconsistencies in detecting and recording people but I’ve spent less time analyzing it because the cam is much closer to the street and I have to do some tricky detection zone stuff. So I’ve just been focused on the second cam’s issues that are very straightforward in analysis. (It’s just not working!)
This was not an issue originally. Over time I just started noticing things like a package would be on the steps. I’d have a recording of the truck pulling up at the street (or pulling away) and then the package just on the steps below. No driver walking up to put it down. Or I’d see a video of someone pulling out of the driveway (to the edge of the view no less) but not them walking past the cam (from left to right) to get to the car. It’s constantly skipping PEOPLE.
If someone opens the front door from the inside, it detects. If someone walks up to the door and hits the doorbell, it detects. But all other motion beyond the ~5’ involving people is missed.
For context, I have MANY Wyze cams (at least one of almost every model ever sold), I’ve been a beta test program participant for several years, and I am very familiar with the settings (and quirks) of the various devices. The problem is not a network signal/strength (3 full bars), power (wired and proper voltage), recording cooldown (set to 0), event trigger/custom recording preference, detection zone (none), or motion detection sensitivity setting issue (close or far has made no difference). I’ve tried a hundred permutations of EVERYTHING.
Over time, it has simply stopped detecting/recording people beyond ~5’ of the cam. And it’s MADDENING.
Has anyone else run into this problem with this cam in particular? I sort of expected to find at least a few other posts about this (I think I found one but it was a short unresolved thread). But there is also some real fatigue on folks posting about product issues with Wyze. I even waited a few months to sit down and take the time to post this myself. And I’m not really expecting anything in the way of resolution, TBH. Just looking for validation that this is yet another shortcoming of a particular cam model.
(I am testing the new Pan Cam v4 and finding them a pretty solid model outside of the “return to home position” setting that is making some folks crazy.
I’ll likely be adding one to each property to make up for the poor performance of the various Doorbell cams that I’ve tried. Just disappointed as I had such high hopes for the Duo Cam Doorbell and it’s clever design. )
