Wyze DashCam

This is a new item for Wyze, but I think it well within your wheelhouse. A dash camera. I’ve been shopping for one with multiple camera views. They been becoming more popular with all the self employed working from their vehicles (door dash, grub hub, and let’s not forget Uber). It would be nice to have the assurance that whatever happens, it was captured.

Wishing for a Car Dash Cam from Wyze

Hi Wyze Community!

Just trying to see if there are any folks out there wishing that Wyze would manufacture a 2 channel Car Dash Cam that would be easy to install without having to connect long cables from the front camera to the back camera using wireless signals from the front camera(?). The rear camera would need to be a bit larger to accommodate for an electrical input source. Many cars and SUVs have an electrical source in the back of the car, so this could work. Just a thought. Thanks!

I’d like to see a wyze car dash cam also.

With so many expensive, but poor quality dashcams out there, you would think this would be a home run for wyze! Let’s get it done!

@haskeb1987 if you’re looking for a decent inexpensive MIRROR/Rear dashcam, check out WolfBox 900 or higher. If you’re looking for a cam that attaches to your windshield/rear try RedTiger F7N or higher. Both have players that can playback Front and Rear simultaneously with GPS, Speed, Time, Sound, and Parking Lot sensors and have lots of settings to tweak their cameras for your specific needs.

For Wyze to get into the daskcam market it would take tons of R/D and proprietary player created. They’ve deemed it unWyze (pun) to pursue this market at this time.

Í have also asked the same question before realizing there were already a gazilion people asking the same thing. I have up holding my breath for Wyze to come out with one. I bought a Nextbase one that had both front and rear view. It was for my husband who really wanted one to begin with so I can’t say much about the brand except that he is very happy with it.

@gesaproduce Dashcams are truly a niche market and are rarely actually needed except in the rare event of an accident or a random deer that crossed your path. They are truly a set & forget type camera system. Given the miriad of intermitten issues that Wyze cameras are plagued with, I’m not sure I would “trust” that the one time I needed that recording that it would have absolutely have been recorded and saved.

Don’t get me wrong, I truly love all my Wyze cameras (I have 20+) but they are prone to random mishaps even on the best routers and ideal circumstances. Just saying!!

As previously mentioned, I have used various Wyze cameras in my pickup for years. The video below of my accident was from a V3 (view forward), and a V2 (looking at my ugly mug). Currently there is a V4 looking forward and a V3 looking at the driver. When I have some time, a V3 Pro will be looking rearward.

I have questions, hope you dont mind. That is a great picture even for a v3…i guess you are using a 12vdc to 5vdc unit? Does it power up with the vehicle starting or powered all the time?

The picture seems to be stable (not shaky). Do you leave it on the dash during the day? I’m concerned about heat from sun.

Thanks for the idea while the V3’s are on sale.

I have both cameras mounted to the windshield behind the rear view mirror. This puts them mostly behind the array of black dots on the windshield - which does at least help with heat. I am using the metal disk and double sided tape that comes with the cameras and them magnetically attaching the cameras to the metal disks. They are mounted and powered 24x7. In my case, I have an aux. battery for my two way radios and the cameras are powered from that so even if I go days without driving and run the aux. battery into the ground, I can still start the truck. I am using a cigarette lighter plug to quad USB converter for the two cameras up front and will have a separate 12 > 5 volt converter for the rear facing camera. Prior to a few years ago I was using the normal vehicle battery to power the cameras. The only time I ran the battery down was while I had Covid in 2020 and did not leave the house for a week. My router reported that the cameras stopped responding to pings on day 5.

I guess the biggest difference is the PLAYER.
My 1st attached pic of the DashCam player with all the telemetry as to Speed, Time, Google Map, both Front and Rear recordings, etc.
My 2nd attached pic is the Full Screen of the recording played on Windows Media Player if details were needed such as license plates.
I believe those are the details that would be needed in an accident scenario…just sayin’.

Thanks for the reply… do the cams require wifi all the time to function as a basic recorder. Or is there wifi available in the vehicle. I could connect to my phone Hotspot i guess.

@LloydM that is a fantastic question!!! The answer is NO. The cameras simply record to a single SD card (the same ones used in the Wyze Cams) and nowhere else. I suppose if the car went up in flames, then so would the camera and SD card.

The recordings also overwrite the oldest. There are settings for recording quality (720p, 1080p, 2160p) and also record time (1 min, 3 min, 5 min. etc) and there isn’t a limit on the SD card size. I use a 128gb and typically have 2 or 3 weeks of 1080p recordings. You can set up the Cams to turn off when the car key is turned off, but still has power connected to record if another car bumps you in a parking lot.

There is a plethera of settings and player and years of R/D involved if Wyze wanted to join the Dash Cam market… which is truthfully flooded with manufacturers already. I did testing here in the US on both Wolfbox and RedTiger for their factories in China, which is why I recommended both of them earlier.

I’ll be happy to answer further questions if you want to email me (just add @GMail.com to my name). I hope this info has been helpful.

No. The cameras connect to my WiFi at home and also at work. Other than that, they have no WiFi connectivity. They all have uSD cards set to continuous recording.

@K6CCC , the 2 brands I know about are only connected to WIFI so they can receive Firmware Updates and are NOT connected to a service to store recordings. I would be surprised yours would be storing recordings for you without paying a monthly or annual Service Fee for that. As you didn’t mention which brand you have, I cannot say for certain.

As I said earlier today, I am currently using a Wyze V4 as the forward facing camera, and a V3 looking at the driver. I have also used at various times, a Wyze V2, and V3 Pro cameras. And although I do have CamPlus on the cameras (might as well since I have CamPlus Unlimited), they are recording continuously to the local uSD cards - which does NOT require CamPlus in any way at all. The CamPlus is sort of a “who cares” in the case of the truck cameras.

My bad, I didn’t realize you were the Wyze Dashcam Guy… so I stand corrected (kinda). Yes, the Wyze cams record perfectly fine on their own SD card. Whenever the recordings can’t be played back from AWS, I simply go to the SD card and there it all is.

Yes, I’ve noticed the random mishaps, but they’ve generally been great caneras and I’m happy with them. I think most computerized electronics have random mishaps occasionally. My hubby is perfectly happy with his dashcam. It is set and forgotten, and hopefully, never needed. :crossed_fingers::grin:

@gesaproduce I totally agree with everything you said.

When I only had a few Wyze cameras (4 or 5) everything was fine, but as I got more and more they started having connectivity problems. I eventually upgraded to a TP-Link router (model: Archer AX73) and magically all connectivity issues vanished. I do use a router repeater that helps keep cameras that are over 100 feet away connected w/o any issues.

So, bottom line, I do love my Wyze cams and the DashCams (Wolfbox & RedTiger), too. They all provide a mental comfort in their differing roles in my life.
