Wyze sent me another email saying that they verified the MAC address and order number information, that I have the correct camera. WHAT?! I did not get what I ordered. They have the pictures and yet still say I have a Telephoto camera.
If thatās true, then is it possible that this thing was somehow manufactured with some OG Telephoto internals (like the radio/Wi-Fi adapter) and some OG parts? Just what kind of bastardized chimera of a doohickey did you end up with? The plot thickens!
This is what makes the most sense to me, especially since I think youāve pretty clearly demonstrated that this is an oddball situation, and I donāt understand why they arenāt making an allowance for exceptional circumstances. This does not seem to be aligned with their
Creating goodwill with customers has tangible value. Whatās happening in this situation seems like the opposite of that.
Just sell it to me and try to forget this ever happened. PM on the wayā¦
Itās a doohickey of a mess alright. Has the purple ring like a Telephoto, but has a flush lens, spotlight and grooved rings around the lens like an OG. Someone grabbed the wrong parts putting this thing together. What Wyze should do is have this camera sent back to them, so they can inspect it for themselves. Because they think I got what I ordered, which isnāt true.
It appears to be an OG Tel with the wrong lens assembly glued in. So the MAC and everything else would think it is an OG TEL including their system. Support probably doesnāt understand what the issue is, they probably think OP is saying they got a regular normal OG instead of a TEL, i.e. shipped the wrong thing. They may be suspicious they are trying to get a more expensive camera free. This is one of those cases where your approach with the reps can make every difference in the world.
The thing is I explained everything clearly to the first rep I spoke to on the phone and who completely understood. Then I basically had to explain it all again via email with the next rep that contacted me. Then again with the third rep via email. And itās all on the same email thread so they all could read it and see the pictures. I guess maybe tomorrow I can try calling them to speak with someone again about it. I get it that they might be suspicious but Iām not trying to get a more expensive camera, as I didnāt buy the less expensive OG camera. I bought the more expensive Telephoto camera and they are now claiming that I got what I paid for, which isnāt true. For whatever reason no matter how many times I tell them that this camera is basically an OG camera and not a Telephoto camera, they are not understanding that.
It sounds like @Seapup offered to buy it.
I expect he will try to set it up as an OG and see what happens. I also expect heāll try setting it up as an OG-T and see the difference.
Knowing him, as I do, I bet thereās a fairly likely chance that he will at some point open it up and dissect it to see if the innards are different too. So I hope you do sell it to him
You got it! Iāll be attempting to set it up as OG, OGT, then dissect it, inspect it, reassemble with a completely different lens keeping whatever board it came with, hopefully OGT board.
I think dave27 is right that they mistakenly put it together with an OG lens assembly, everything else is a Telephoto. I donāt think there is anyway without replacing the board to get it fully functioning as an OG, to get the spotlight working and software to show itās an OG.
Thatās my guess alsoā¦ OG lens in OGT body with OGT board. Either way, I have enough internals to make anything. Iām just lacking the OGT body to complete my project cam.
Frankencam?
I canāt see how it would be anything other than an OGT board, I have to imagine they have at least basic protection in the firmware to prevent cross flashing even manually, and youād probably need something like a JTAG interface or similar, and to crack their code to force it to accept the firmware, and that assumes everything else on the board is identical.
No idea what the manufacturing line is like but Iām guessing the lens goes in near the end, and is just in a bin with adhesive already on it. Iād call it āthe last cam of the shift and I wanna go homeā.
Even if you were hoping to end up with 2 cams, the one you have could never be flashed as an OG (without major software and hardware engineering experience), will never have a spotlight, and image quality will likely be off.
Send it to @Seapup, buy an OGT, then wait for the OG to go on sale for $15 to $20 which they do from time to time (I think some Home Depots actually have them on clearance for $20) and youāll be better off than a semi-functional free cam.
Thereās been some good sales on the v4s also, they were $25 for a while, not sure when that will come back. Though I actually think I prefer the OG over the v4.
Thatās when I got 'em, and I decided to try Cam v4s only because at the time Cam OGs were also on sale for ~$24. I wouldāve been okay with either at that price, especially since the Cam v4s donāt actually have the Edge AI āfreeā Person Detection.
I got my OGs for $15, at that price I grabbed a couple extras for spots I didnāt originally intend to bother (inside my front and back doors). Iāve seen them at home depot on clearance for $20, they should drop lower at some point, but I donāt need any more.
Yeah, I think theyāre really underrated for what they are, and at that price you can get something thatās a camera, a motion detector (Iāve used one just to trigger lights), a little spotlight, and an accessory doorbell chime (whenever Wyze gets around to fixing the v3.0 app so accessing that feature doesnāt give the āFailā message).
Also, there was some kinda funky partial outage a while back where the only Wyze camera I could get to stream on any Google Home devices was Cam OG. Theyāre like little workhorses, even if they donāt have the standard screw that the other camera models use.
Actually I prefer the OG mount over the V3/V4 style. I also have two of them using the stack kit which was handy too. I might actually considering upgrading one or two to v4 if it didnāt require changing the mounting.
Well finally after contacting a 4th Wyze rep and explaining it all over again, they are sending me a replacement Telephoto camera and a return shipping label for the frankencam. Iām happy for the outcome but it really shouldnāt be this difficult. Iāll be opening this replacement camera up right away to make sure itās the right one. I hope they donāt send me a used camera, I donāt think they do that. I see that the OG camera is on sale for $24.99, but think Iāll wait until itās $20. Besides I can use the V3 with this telephoto for now.
Thatās awesome for you.
And my condolences to @Seapup and our lost dissection entertainment
I received the replacement OG Telephoto camera from Wyze today and mailed off the Frankencam back to them. Opened up the box and itās the correct camera, then set it up and itās the fixed telephoto view. Is there anyway to get the PIP to work with a V3 or is it just for the wide view OG camera?
