Web-view portal not working on MS Edge. Livestreams keep resetting

As of approximately 8p.m. EST, the webview portal no longer works when using MS Edge. Every few seconds the livestreams reset. I’ve had one of the camera’s livestream reset so often that the camera now says “Device offline”, which always means I have to visit the remote location to power-cycle the device. Ridiculous!
I’ve tried Chrome and Opera, and they seem to work (i.e., the livestreams do not constantly reset). But I can’t use Chrome for the livestreams because I use that as my browser for all other things.

What’s going on with Wyze webview not supporting MS Edge? Was there another “upgrade”???

I have problems with the web portal too. Two of my four Cam V3 will not show a live stream. The other two work fine. ALL of my Wyze cams show livestream fine in the Android app. Not sure if it’s because the one Cam v3 is connected to the Wyze lightbulb control and the other is part of the Wyze floodlight setup. But really, both of those cameras receive power full-time AND both have solid connections to the home network.

The Android app was showing the livestreams just fine. It’s Wyze’s portal…that’s the untamed beast.

From the support site:

  • Recommended browser: Google Chrome*

We highly recommend using Wyze Web View on the latest version of Chrome. Download Chrome

MS Edge is the default on Windows computers. MS Edge is a Chromium browser and shares a codebase with Google Chrome. It can use 90% of Chrome’s extensions. It shouldn’t make any difference.

I’m aware that edge is chromium based, so are several others.

There are major differences though. Chromium is just the engine in the car.

With several cams (the 4K ones specifically) you actually have to trick Edge into loading the video stream by making it report itself as Chrome. That’s because MS does not include the license for HEVC where Chrome does.

@dave27 Thanks, but every time I have to relaunch MS Edge and connect to Wyze’s portal, I see the big banner stating that they “recommend” the latest Chrome. “Recommend” doesn’t mean obligatory, and neither do they state any possible consequences of not using Chrome. And if it worked for years…should there not be a notification of why they would suddenly halt cross-browser functionality?

I forgot to mention/re-state that I now had to switch from MS Edge to another non-Chrome browser - Opera, and the livestreaming works fine as before.

@dave27 I have some of the 4K cameras, and they stream in on MS Edge just fine. I’m not technically familiar with your reference to HEVC licensing, so I can’t comment on it. Is there a way I can check? But, even if the content is being streamed from the cameras in 4K, my monitors are not 4K capable, so the quality of the livestream would be at the maximum resolution of the screen.

My issue is not with 4K. It’s that two of my 4 Cam v3 (1080p) units will not stream period from the web portal. They are all on the same network. They stream just fine via Android. Edge cache has been cleared.

If you go against a recommendation, then obviously there are potential consequences. If you read between the lines, it means their developers are focused on Chrome and probably not doing significant (if any) regression testing against Edge.

HEVC is the compression used for 4K. Even if your screen isn’t 4K (web view doesn’t stream at 4K anyway) your browser needs to be able to decode the video. HEVC isn’t free, Chrome has decided to include it at their own cost, Edge normally only will play it if the remote party (like Youtube) has paid for the license and sends your browser a message saying so. However older versions of windows and Edge did include it, and I believe all Macs include it, so one of those may explain why it is working for you.

Others here have “tricked” edge into showing 4K streams by making it tell the Wyze server that it is Chrome (and thus has a license). But I don’t think that’s related to the issues you’re seeing now, it wouldn’t work at all if it was a CODEC/Licensing problem.

@dave27 Thanks for the explanation. I agree with your other comment about the “in between the lines”, but like I said, it works for Opera. Anyway… a kludge is as good as any other these days.

MS Edge (Version 154.0.4258.37) works for me with a V4.

Also works on Firefox Version 156.0.1

Once in a while it gets stuck at ‘Connecting’ but a ‘Refresh Page’ fixes that.

Yeah… I just tried using MS Edge again today (this morning), and it works again.

Same here. One camera was slow to load but then all four came up. Weird. Two would never come up before no matter what refresh, reload, cookies, cache etc was going on. I did send logfiles to Wyze for both but I doubt anyone would have worked on them that quickly.
