V4 camera, recording failed when recording from playback

If I remember correctly we had this same communication issue with outages. They have learned nothing about PQI.

Android. I tried to make my avatar android like.

I never read tags but it seems we are both on Android.

I’ve been having the same exact issue. Only happens on the V4. V3s are fine. Updated app, all permissions, I’ve tried reinstalling the app. Nothing works. What a waste.

After testing, i noticed if i do a force stop, it will let me record one clip from the sd. Then when I try again, it will give me the error.

Hello. Here are two workarounds that have been working for me. I am using a Pixel 7 Pro with Android 14, Wyze app version 3.1.5.569, Cam v4 firmware version 4.52.8.0648, and a 64GB micro SD card formatted as FAT32 from a Chromebook. The Wyze app has no permissions granted.

Method #1:
Start playback a little bit before where you want to start recording. Select the “Album” button to go to the album. You will have about five seconds to exit the album and go back to the playback screen. Once you are back at the playback screen, hit the record button as soon as you can.

Method #2;
Start a playback. Now position the playback marker to an area with no recording and let go of the screen. You should see a “No video available at this time” message in the playback window, and the record button should be disabled. At that moment, you have about five seconds to move the marker to where you want to start recording. When moving the marker, do not lift your finger or linger too long at one spot. Once the marker is where you want it, immediately lift your finger to start the playback. Hit the record button as soon as it becomes enabled.

These workarounds may occasionally fail, so just try again if they do. They usually work the second time. I hope it works for you all.

To the people at Wyze, if these workarounds work, then I hope your engineers can use them to troubleshoot the problem. Please don’t downgrade the severity of this problem just because there is a workaround. Please fix it. Don’t let this problem linger like the scheduling problem for the Wyze Outdoor Plug (forum link). I am still waiting for a fix on that one.

Edit: Updated method #2 and changed some wordings.

Nice, the switch to the album and back quick trick looks like it worked for me. Appreciate the help. You know Wyze isn’t in a hurry when their solution is to pay them for cam+

I can confirm your method #1 worked for me several times, but not every time. This is encouraging as it points to a software bug that can be fixed. I hope they actually fix it though, I have several v4 cams still in box and they are going back to the store if this isn’t resolved soon.

They monitor hashtags here, as in, #WhenWillThisBeFixed

I spent some more time looking into this problem earlier today and found a more convenient workaround.

Method #3:
Start a playback. Touch the playback window to display the playback control buttons. Press the pause button, tap the window to display the controls again, press the play button, and then press the record button within five seconds.

Alternatively, you can press any of the other playback control buttons and then press the record button within five seconds.

So far, all of the workarounds require playback to be reset in some way, and they all have a similar five second window requirement to start the recording.

I also connected my phone to adb and collected Android logs for a successful recording and for a failed recording. For a failed recording, it looks like the MPEG4Writer component failed to initialize in some way. The log for a failed five second recording looks like:

In the log for a successful recording, there was a lot more going on between the PreAllocation enabled and reset() entries, and between the reset() and release() entries.

Wow! Method #3 worked for me.
Thank you, personNo407734!!

And to the Wyze guys, please…

I updated my last post for method #3. You can just pause, play, then press the record button. That’s much better than skipping around the timeline when using the other control buttons. Not sure why that didn’t occur to me sooner.

I also added more hashtags in hopes of attracting some more attention.

I understand how you feel lljeska909. There is an issue with the Wyze Outdoor Plug that I have been following for almost eight months now that still hasn’t been fixed. I won’t be surprised if this doesn’t get fixed either.

I stuck with Wyze because of the starlight sensor, but I noticed that other companies are now offering the same sensor for around the same price. At some point, I may start looking into these other companies to see what they have to offer, and more importantly, if they actually support their products.

Until then, there are workarounds, and I hope that one of them works for you.

I can’t replicate this bug on my V4 but I just tested a pan cam V3 and when recording from an SD card clip, I get an image instead. With Wyze it’s always something …

Love this.

Thank you for bringing the receipts.

To anyone who created a recording using one of the workarounds, if you haven’t done so, you should check your recording to make sure it can actually play back. I found a couple of recordings that only showed black or green, and a handful that only played back partway. The rest were fine. Just a heads up to give affected people a chance to recapture a recording before it’s too late.

To @p2788deal, can you try the steps below if it’s not a bother? The steps below will always produce a failed recording on my Pixel 7 Pro.

Steps to reproduce the v4 playback recording problem:

  1. Start a playback from the SD card.
  2. Let the playback run for at least six seconds. I recommend using the clock on the timeline to count the seconds.
  3. Press the record button to start a recording.
  4. Record for a few seconds.
  5. Press the record button to stop the recording.

If the recording fails, a toast message should be displayed.

Following these steps produces a good clip from a V4. Note I have a Samsung phone.

Thanks p2788deal for giving it a try. Most of the affected devices seem to be Pixels and Samsungs, but you have a Samsung, so that makes things a bit more mysterious.

My phone is a Motorola and I also tried it on an Asus tablet and it failed to record a clip on either so I don’t think the issue is brand specific, just seems isolated to Android though. The workarounds posted do seem to allow me to record a clip, but it’s not 100%, sometimes it still fails or the clip seems corrupted and doesn’t play back.

Just out of curiosity, what did the lawyer say?

Probably still checking if Wyze has deep pockets to pay for the lawyers’ share of the pot.

You think enough users will join the lawsuit?
