USB Connection Protection

Hints for those suffering from corroded USB connections where the two cables meet. DeoiIT D5 or WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner both do a good job of removing the gree corrosion. They both dry clean. For protecting the connection site, I bought Food Grade Soft Silicone tubing with a 5/16 inch inner diameter and 7/16 inch outer diameter. It sells for about $2.50 per foot or less at many online retailers. I Cut it to cover the entire connection site where the sleeve supplied by Wyze covers about 75% of the length. After 6 months of rain and snow, they are still tight and clean. They are also more resistant to UV light from the sun and cold temperatures than the Wyze sleeves.

I’ve had self fusing silicone tape on all my outdoor cam USB connections for years, works great and a small roll goes a long way, that stuff really stretches. Also UV resistant and waterproof. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I keep a few variants of Deoxit in my arsenal, along with CRC contact cleaner (same ingredients as the WD40 contact cleaner which is also good). Worth mentioning the WD40 is not standard WD40, you specifically want the “specialist contact cleaner” - people get confused by that a lot.

Deoxit D5 intentionally leaves a bit of protective residue behind which is good for some things and not great for others, for stuff where I want it totally clean I use the standard CRC stuff. For USB connectors that aren’t transferring data Deoxit is fine, probably would be fine even if they were doing data transfer.

For my Wyze connections I just put a bit of silicone (dielectric) grease where the rubber “boot” slides over the male and female ends and wrapped then in good quality white electrical tape and they’ve been solid for over 2 years. Normally I’d use heat shrink (the stuff with silicone already inside in this case) but the difference in size between the plug and cable is a bit too much for that.

All the sealing tape I have is black but obviously as @Antonius says that stuff works great as well.
