Stretched Playback In Landscape

Hello. I have been looking around for an answer but I can’t seem to find it. When I view a camera live or on playback and have the phone in a portrait orientation the aspect ratio is fine with black bars on the sides. It also looks proper when I view a camera live in landscape. The issue is that when I view playback in landscape the image is stretched to fill the screen. I have looked everywhere for an option and also checked the settings on the phone. My phone is a Galaxy S23 Ultra and my app version is v2.50.9. All cameras are Pan Cam v2 with the latest firmware. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

That’s a puzzle. I can’t replicate your precise conditions because I’m using Wyze app v2.50.7.487 on a Google Pixel 4a running Android 13 with a Cam Pan v3 (so quite a bit of difference in variables there), and I don’t see the stretching in landscape when I play recorded footage, but I’m playing this back from a microSD card.

I mention that because I’ve read elsewhere that there can be differences when playing events from microSD vs. from the cloud, but I’m not a Cam Plus subscriber, so I can’t speak to that directly. I’m just tossing that out there in case it makes a difference in the situation you’re describing, and maybe it’ll help someone here provide a better answer if you can be specific about which “playback” you mean.

Someone else posted this a few days ago. It’s all related to how you deal with an aspect ratio of the source video vs the display device. The two major choices are to add black bars on top and bottom or left and right (depending on the ratios), or clip either the top and bottom or left and right edges (again, depending on the ratios). The third option that NO ONE likes and is fortunately almost never used any more is to stretch the height or width (making everyone look really skinny or really fat).
Turns our in the Wyze µSD card playback they clip the top and bottom as opposed to live view where they add black bars. It would be nice if they were consistent…
The other person that reported this commented that the timestamp was clipped off.

Thank you for your replies. I just came across another odd part to add to all this. I noticed that this stretched problem only happens when I view a video from the events screen. If I go and view playback of the camera normally the image isn’t stretched anymore.

In other words, if I go to the list of event recordings and tap one, then turn my phone sideways the image stretches to the edges of the screen making everyone obese. But if while watching the clip I tap Playback (the cameras have SD cards) then the image reloads and displays properly with the black bars on the side.

I am able to replicate this on all of my Cam Pan V2’s and on two different model Android phones. A Samsung S23 Ultra and a Samsung Z Flip 6.

So the problem resolved itself in the most unexpected and seemingly unrelated way. I changed my Wyze password which forced me to log back in to the app. When I logged back in and viewed some videos they all retained the correct aspect when I turn the phone to landscape. Bizarre that it solved itself this way because between when I first made this post and now, I had changed to a new phone and was still getting the problem with the aspect in landscape.
