SOLVED: Help! Stuck in tutorial screen when in portrait orientation on tablet!

I just had to delete and reinstall the Wyze app on my Android 13 tablet.

Now when viewing a camera and I tap the rotate icon to go into vertical portrait orientation to get to the settings icon, when in portrait orientation I’m stuck in the tutorial with no apparent way to dismiss it.

Yes, I’ve cycled through all of the tutorial screens. Nothing seems to dismiss the tutorial screen in portrait orientation.

BTW, the “tutorial” is the overlay that pops up when you run the app for the first time that shows you how to pinch this to do that, or tap that to do this, etc.

Do you have the “Skip❘Next” showing at the bottom of the affected screen? Is this affecting a particular camera type (plugin)? Do you have “Auto-rotate” or something like “Display size” (Android Settings ➜ Accessibility ➜ Display size and text) set in a way that could be interfering? What version of the app is this?

I’d probably be inclined to force stop the app, delete the app’s cache and data, delete the app, reboot the tablet, install the app, reboot the tablet again, and then log in and see what happens. If it’s a persistent issue, then I’d open a ticket and also post about it in whichever Wyze News announcement topic is relevant to whatever app version you’re using.

No such message is displayed in vertical portrait mode.

Wyze Cam Pan v3 cameras (all 5 of them), and one Video Doorbell v2. Issue does not exist with my 3 Cam Pan v1s

No.

No. Default Android settings.

Installed current in the Google App Store as of this morning.

I always do those things before asking for help.

I tried contacting customer support, but they kept asking irrelevant questions, read generic solutions from a script, and did not understand the issue.

Is there any way to get to camera settings from landscape orientation? The developers appear to omit an obvious settings gear icon in landscape orientation.

SOLVED.

Okay, I figured it out poking things randomly by trial and error in Android settings. I normally don’t like doing that.

It turns out that the “Skip | Next” dialog was hidden under the stock Android navigation bar. I temporarily switched Android from three button navigation to gesture navigation and was able to see the dialogue and tap “Skip”.

Developers should put that dialogue at the top of the screen in the future. I could be wrong, but I vaguely recall it being that way in the past in the Wyze app.

I’m not aware of a way to do this. My experience with the app is that certain parts of the UI (i.e., certain “pages”) force the display back into a portrait orientation, and I suspect that’s part of the complaints I’ve read from users pushing for full landscape mode support. I think that’s something they should fix, especially for users who have (or want) mounted tablets in landscape orientation for dedicated camera displays.

That’s goofy. The way you describe it, it seems like the tutorial overlay wasn’t respecting the correct “stretch” (or whatever would be the correct developer term) of whatever screen space it’s supposed to be allowed to use, so it was probably trying to “display” below the bottom border of your screen, and maybe toggling that setting reset it in a way that the app was able to detect? Either way, that’s a problem, and it makes me wonder if your tablet has an uncommon geometry for the display or if it’s just a width:height ratio that the developers haven’t accounted for in the code. :man_shrugging:

Whatever the case, I’m glad you got it solved, and thanks for reporting back. Hopefully that will be helpful for others in the future if Wyze doesn’t address it on the development side.
