Sharing Dropbox Links to the Forum 📺

This seems like something that might be useful in its own topic (and I don’t want to derail the original), so…

TL;DR:

:information_source: When pasting a Dropbox video share URL into a Forum post, remember to change the dl=0 at the end to raw=1.

More Detail:

Continuing the discussion from Wyze app 3.2 - Released 10/22/2024:

I’m not privy to the inner mysteries of Discourse. I was just passing along something I read that might be helpful.

The links should both work if you click on them, yes. The difference—at least as I understand it—is the way Discourse handles the embedding within the post. The way you originally did it, Discourse wasn’t embedding in a way that would allow another Forum user to come along and play the video directly within the post. I grabbed the share URL from the Dropbox page in your older post and tried pasting it into a private conversation I was having with @‍discobot:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/9tqf87dbup1xvvpxja93x/Screen_Recording_20241028_094526_Wyze.mp4?rlkey=mgf5ofq9d2zt25jo2wmarvl0c&e=1&st=nb8oj6eq&dl=0

 This yielded this (screenshot, not actual video link).

Then I tried the same thing by pasting the share URL but changing the dl=0 at the end to raw=1 (as I read about in the Dropbox Community), like this:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/9tqf87dbup1xvvpxja93x/Screen_Recording_20241028_094526_Wyze.mp4?rlkey=mgf5ofq9d2zt25jo2wmarvl0c&e=1&st=nb8oj6eq&raw=1

 This yielded this (screenshot, not actual video link).

I was actually able to view that video as an embed within the Forum post itself in both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

That’s why I wrote this, so you can just paste your Dropbox share URL and then remember to change the dl=0 at the end to raw=1.

Hopefully this helps other Dropbox users!

I certainly appreciate the effort.

Here goes the test, I pasted the link into Google Keep, changed this test to 1.

Drum :drum: roll lol

Looks like it works. If I directly paste the Dropbox link, its just as the original was, just a gray blob and why I used Google Keep first to change the 0 to 1.

I checked your post in both Firefox and Chrome.

When I was doing my own testing earlier, I had problems in Firefox when I changed dl=0 to dl=1, and it was sometimes reporting a network error. I think the better solution is to change dl=0 to raw=1, as I indicated above. That provided me with more consistent results in limited testing and appears to be the accepted solution in the Dropbox Community, so if I were you going forward I’d be sure to change the whole thing, not just the final digit.

You’re welcome! Glad to help!
