Powerful access point

Hello,

I tried to install my V3cam in the balcony with a netgear WN3000RPv3 access point in the room, where I have an enet socket.

The problem shows up when the shutter (aluminium) is fully closed (!): the cam almost completely disconnects -running time get stuck while the control phone is 100%connected.

Can someone suggest an “armor penetrating” access point?

Many thanks in advance

Metals attenuate radio signals; WiFi is radio and aluminum is metallic. Keep the aluminum shutters open, or change to non-metallic material.

Looks like the Netgear you have is a WiFi Extender.

Are you sure the camera is connecting to the Extender and not your main WiFi further way?

No AP is going to penetrate metal. Usually the only way a wifi signal can get out of a house is through the windows, so if you cover the window with something that blocks radio signals, it won’t get out.

Only way you’d get around that is to install an outdoor rated AP outside the house.

It can be configured to an AP and yes, I’m sure the cam connects to the AP

Ok but than id like to replace the current AP in the room by an AP which also act as a switch to accommodate the enet cable from outside AP and the inside wifi clients. Any idea?

Any router that supports AP mode will allow you to use the LAN ports as switch ports (often it puts the WAN port in as a switch port too). Some APs have an extra port too. If you want to stick with Netgear, I would assume any of their routers that are compatible with their mesh system would probably work, but you can also look for a mesh node that has more than one port (not sure if Netgear has any).

Thanks, ill try with a junked router from a friend’s installation. It has 4 rj ports and wifi

It turned out that to make an AP out of d-link router I just had to turn off its dhcp

Yes if you connect a LAN port on most any router into your LAN without DHCP enabled it will effectively just be an AP. The router is still running, but not doing anything. I still prefer to use a true AP or router that supports AP mode, but in reality it will work fine.
