A critter chewed on the OG Cable section which is permanently attached to the camera.
Normally (this is not the first time, they have a chew history with my Wyze cams) I would just cut, clean and reconnect the ends with electrical tape, but the chew is really close to the camera housing. Not sure I have room.
Any recommendations for solutions?
What type of cable are the Wyze cams using?
Any help appreciated. Aside from Kevlar cable wrap, I’m not sure how to harden these critical sections of wire against damage.
Should be enough room there to solder and heat shrink. You could also cut it and try and feed it into the cam and solder directly in there, then use caulking or similar to seal it. May not be worth the $20 or so saved by not replacing the cam (in fact you can get a v4 for that price sometimes).
Actually I see in another thread that Walmart.com is selling the black v4s for $20 right now.
Might want to consider some sort of wire mesh or even using foil HVAC tape on the exposed wires to deter them.
In lieu of that, put Vick’s VapoRub on the wires. They hate that stuff.
Had one chew a hole in the plastic fuel line on my personal car. The fuel system has residual pressure - about 50 psi - so when the hole got big enough the rodent got a mouthful of gasoline.
I had it happen on one of the EVAP lines on top of my gas tank in my truck last summer. Normally I just pressurize the system a bit hit it all over with soapy water and find the bubbles. This time the hole was large enough it was just too big for soapy water to do anything. As I was getting ready to start pushing smoke through I turned the pressure up a bit and could hear it rushing out under there.
Luckily since no gas ever passes through that line easy enough to cut the whole section out and push on some slightly larger fuel line on both ends to join it back together. But I wrapped the whole thing in aluminum HVAC tape since they hate biting metal.
Luckily not electrical as that can be a very costly nightmare. I have no clue why auto engineers thought it would be a good idea to start using soy covered wiring in cars (eco friendly = yummy). Guess it helps them sell lots of $500 wiring harnesses.
I believe there are lawsuits about this, from several manufacturers. Volvo for sure.
Years ago a customer brought his Lexus in because of a misfire. Mice chewed through wiring for #3 fuel injector. This was way before rodent tape was available. Told the customer to put some Vick’s VapoRub on the air cleaner lid. Was towed back in a week later. Mouse chewed right through my repair section. Customer thought I was blowing smoke. Insurance paid for the first repair but declined the second. We didn’t have any diagnosis the second time
I have a family member in NH that lives in the middle of a big field. Car is old enough that it doesn’t have soy but the field mice like to make nests in the fall in the engine bay and trunk chewing up the noise/fire insulation. We make a mixture of peppermint essential oil, water, and a bit of dish soap (lets the oil and water mix) and spray the wheel wells, engine bay and trunk every fall when they are looking to nest. Has worked like a charm, and the car interior smells nice (from the fresh air intake in the engine bay).
My neighbors VW has soy wiring and a rat did about $1000 in damage to the main wiring harness. I thought my truck was immune since it sits high off the ground, but one found its way up there, but that was a $2 fix (well not counting the hours of frustration). Hopefully the aluminum tape I put over everything in that area keeps them away. Luckily they stay out of my garage where the car is.
