Loss of Power Loss of Video

So true. I have two Dash Cams from the same company, the one from 2021 has the Lithium ion batteries and the new 2024 version has two high capacity supercapacitors and full 4K recording. I wish WYZE had something to finish the recordings also. I got the new one recently for $25.00 cheaper ($75.00) than the 2021 cam. :upside_down_face:

If it is mission critical then put a UPS on it with a 6 inch cable. It only has to hold over for 1+ minutes. Cheap power banks will do. If you do this test, test test.

Super capacitor-- love it but it may be getting big and expensive.

Or live with it. It is a compromise and in my IMHO a good one.

Contrary to their name theyā€™re actually quite small. The main issue is the cheap and readily available ones are typically only around 3 volts, but the dashcam manufacturers have managed to make that enough to finish writing the file.

There is an APC 650VA UPS on sale today for like $45. Not as good as the $30 to $40 ones they had in years past but close.

There is a separate thread for the battery banks and which ones are able to operate in a ā€œUPS Likeā€ mode with no interruption, @JKB may want to have a look at that thread for ideas. Not really the way they were intended to be used but even if they wear out every year or two, a couple of the options are pretty inexpensive (but starting to approach cheap UPS pricing which would be my preferred approach).

My Dash cams is less than half the size of a WYZE cam.

What did your dashcam cost?

Iā€™m laughing. 60+ years ago in junior high electronics class we used to take super capacitors and do things to body parts that are non repeatable. Times changešŸ˜Ž

In bulk, a supercapacitor these days is under a buck, but I guess when youā€™re selling cams for $10 to $20 that is a big chunk (plus there are a few other cheap components to add it to the circuit).

Cam plus might help with this, not sure what logic they use, if it starts streaming and uploading as soon as the event is detected, that might yield a usable video clip. I know it at the very least sends a still frame right away but not sure about the video.

We used to stick standard caps into regular switch controlled outlets or power strips so when someone flipped it on theyā€™d crap their pants. Nice little firecracker.

Been there done thatšŸ¤£

Yeah mine are like 10 years old now and use a little LiPo battery. I had to replace them at one point and the ones that were in there were the cheapest, thinnest LiPos you can imagine. Theyā€™re basically a battery made of foil and thin cellophane. Some day when I replace them Iā€™ll go with ones with supercapacitors, less likely to be damaged (and not function) in a crash, and also not nearly as heat sensitive.

Thanks for the great info Dave- At this point Iā€™ll stop looking for data that doesnā€™t exist. As for the battery or UPS, in my case I donā€™t need it. The chances of a car taking out a telephone pole 30 feet into my yard where the camera is mounted (soon to be new poleā€¦ LOL) is rare. Replacement power will be in conduit making it even more unlikely. I was more interested in getting that minute of video than fixing the storage process. Your information makes good sense. Funnyā€¦ while typing this a Wyze ā€œEngineerā€ just emailed me asking about the firmware of the V3 cameraā€¦

You Paid
$75.00 USD
You saved $24.99
I think it is Cheaper than my V3 Pro when they first came out or close to it.
Yeah, times have changed. :upside_down_face:
I got the new cam this month because I was tired off swapping the cam between vehicles. I put the new one in my truck.

Hope you knocked on wood.

Of course had you had some sort of power backup solution or if the camera was mounted somewhere else, it never would have happened.

Unless you have cam plus (or cam plus light) pretty certain it doesnā€™t exist. Others mentioned checking the SD card which Iā€™m sure youā€™ve done, and it is almost definitely not there anyway.

Even with cam plus Iā€™m not certain it would have captured it.

Checked them all yesterday. Cam Plus captured exactly what is on the SD card.

We should all set up a ring of cameras with each watching another one until the circle is completed.

Camera centipede.
