Absolutely love this forum GUI / functionality. Is it an in-house project? If so, is it open-source?
How are you accessing the forum? Can you try a different browser on your PC and try your phone and see what happens?
I click the link in Wyze Forum Update email to bring me to the Forums
I cannot directly access the forum if so bookmarked. I have to log in first on the Wyze site… while in the forum, it shows that I am not logged in and it askes for credentials
Same error messasge
I don’t use a phone for web surfing and I’m not about to change browsers. Shoddy coding by the web admin is the culprit. That happens when they use coding shortcuts instead of using standard HTML.
This forum uses the forum software Discourse. It’s very widely used and not made by Wyze.
Are you using a VPN, ad blockers, cookies disabled or anything else weird?
Harry, I tested the forum on my two dev boxes and the link in the email worked okay using edge on one and firefox on the other.
While I have issues with using Discourse for what Wyze is using it for, the site seems to work fine. It actually has a fair amount of transparent HTML/CSS and I wouldn’t characterize it as shoddy coding. Has more HTML than I would expect in today’s world.
Since I have work to do that I can get paid for, lol, I don’t have time to do a deep dive into the sign on. Wyze is using an SSO that your security settings may not like. To me, that’s a bit unusual as the norm would be to have the forum login outside of other business. But it’s not uncommon; it’s easier on the users.
The only thing I noticed is that the recaptcha is touchy; a quick loss of focus kicked it out.
I agree with the captcha problem but also I use a lot of privacy extensions plus what’s built into browsers. I also used the Vivaldi browser bare naked that has no extensions except the built in privacy functions of the browser and still get the same results. I always block trackers, and a pox on websites that insert trackers into their pages. I allow cookies but I use “cookie auto delete” extension on Firefox to delete them when I close either a tab or close the browser, so that is not something that would cause my current problem. The problem, I believe and I could be wrong, is the fact that Wyze inserts trackers into their pages in order to monetize the Forum section. This is not my first time that tracker blockers has broken a website but my intent when reporting my experience with the site is to try to induce Wyze to be honest and ethical by eliminating trackers on their site. I am under no illusions that Wyze will forgo monetization in order to do the right thing. Hopefully, Wyze users will follow this thread and understand how websites harvest their data.
the forum uses cookies to save your login token. If you delete them, it wont know your logged in, and prompt you to do so.
Not a problem… I do that for all websites that require a log in. I have been doing that for decades. All of my devices a set up in a similar manner. I do this for security reasons. I have owned computers since 1982 (pre internet) and I have never had a device that saves user IDs nor passwords. I urge all computer users do do the same. I also, on a regular basis, unplug my router for a few hours in order for my ISP assign me a new IP address. Again, I urge all users to take this security step. Hackers hack by IP addresses.
I don’t know the details of your setup, but that’s a strange issue that others aren’t seeing, and due to your abnormal setup, that’s probably the first place to start troubleshooting. If you can try it on a normal browser setup with no extra security stuff in place let us know how it goes.
Often, it’s not the site owner that is doing the monetizing, it’s third-party providers. There was an interesting article recently showing that many government websites have tracking code in them. They’re not monetizing or, in most cases really tracking anything but it comes with the handy plug-ins. My own gov website ends up with trackers due to some Google apps; we barely glance at the Google reports no less look at the details. Our security is handled by an aggressive firewall.
I think @IEatBeans has a good idea to run a test with a browser with default settings just to see what happens. There’s at least one, whose name I can’t remember, that will give you details about what it sees and what it considers “wrong”.
Mike, Thank you for both your time and input on this topic. However, I feel compelled to respond to your argument.
First, thank you for confirming my strong opinion that coders are lazy. It seems that you are saying that government coders will use plug ins instead of developing their own code sans trackers. That’s akin to saying, “I’ll use this sub-routine even tho it has malware so I don’t have to write my own subroutine”. Also, isn’t it the responsibility of the government to protect it’s population’s privacy? Not looking at Google’s reports does not mean that Google is not data harvesting (mind you, secretly). You would be surprised how many video players on the internet have trackers imbedded. Sounds to me that the government does not give a hoot about my privacy and is also enabling Google with data harvesting.
Secondly, if you re-read my prior post, I stated to @IEatBeans that I used a bare bones browser (Vivaldi) with the same results. Blocking trackers will, on occasions, break a website and that’s why I turn to Vivaldi. I consider trackers more insidious than cookies because the only way to know that there are trackers on a site is that the tracker extension reports the number of trackers. Websites in many countries are required by law to ask if you will accept their cookies not so with trackers.
Most browsers today include “private browser mode as a default” and some have some have tracking blockers (to name just one: Ghostery), which is my default browser on my phone.
Ciao pino!
(Sorry, @Harryvederci, I couldn’t resist.)
Separately, I want to compliment the persons responsible for the ‘makeover’ of the Support area:
https://support.wyze.com/hc/en-us
I haven’t been there in a long while and it’s head and shoulders above its previous self.
AAAhhhh! emojis, what? no desktop?
