Does V4 emit any IR when not in night vision mode?

I have these cameras focused on my pet bearded dragon and IR can be damaging to its vision. I have night vision turned off.

Would be good to know if these cameras emit any wavelengths of light.

No they should not, easy way to tell is point your phone camera at the V4

Look at it with the IR ON then OFF, If your phone camera is even slightly IR sensitive your can see if it is emitting IR.

The security cams have much greater IR sensitivity however, so placing it in a dark box with IR off you should see nothing, add a piece of white paper for target.

I only have v3 cameras, does the v4 not give you wavelength info for IR like the v3 does?

Not within the app, no. Cam v4’s UI differs significantly from the “old” Cam v3 UI. Cam v4 also has only single wavelength IR, not the “Far” and “Near” settings that you have with Cam v3. The product page says this:

IR Lights: 4x850 nm

I also like doing that. :+1:

I think that’s the right answer. I don’t know about your specific setup for your pet, but making sure  Settings âžś Advanced Settings âžś Camera Status Light is toggled off is probably a good idea, too, especially if the camera is facing glass, because the glass will tend to reflect any light source. If the camera’s lens is facing glass, then you should also be seeing IR reflected in the videos if you have those enabled and emitting.

Then there’s always the black electrical tape option.

Thanks for this!

You’re welcome. You’re probably already doing this, but you’ll want to be sure that SPOTLIGHT CONTROL in Spotlight Settings is set to Manual. That’s something else that’s important for cameras with spotlights sitting behind glass that I should’ve mentioned earlier.

hey hey hey now, we have to give @bryonhu The shout out because he recognized that you can see any infrared /IR output With something as simple as the phone on your camera. Very very well played. This is something that in my life as a realtor I have helped people recognize when they go through homes that aren’t theirs, and I think it’s something that everyone should recognize with the rise of rentals such as Airbnb. Always be aware and study what the items you keep on you are capable of.

I use my phone with fiber optic cables to see if there is light or not (just have to be careful and look at an angle - the more powerful optics can damage the image sensor if straight on). Also handy to check if a remote control is working.

I do have this decades old IR detector card from Radio Shack that still works quite well, but obviously not something I keep with me at all times. Just has a reactive strip on it that shines quite bright when hit with a wide range of IR (probably made out of something that causes cancer in California, but I’m not in CA so I’m safe).

The phone camera isn’t fool proof though, it won’t catch all wavelengths, but pretty much everything any electronics would be using it will pick up at least a faint light.

That’s a real tough one, there are about 5 things you can use to try and detect hidden cameras, and even if you use all all the tricks you probably won’t find 100% of them.

I like you… this one got me giggling

Oh, yeah. I’ve done that, too. :+1:
